“Haisla Anchor: Carla Robinson” Series 2 Episode 18
Carla Robinson was a National CBC News anchor who grew up in Kitimat and Bella Bella. Her genuine interest in people nurtured an interest in telling stories at an early age. By the time she was 17, she was a reporter for a weekly newspaper in Terrace. After completing degrees at the University of Western Ontario and Carleton University, Robinson moved to a career at CBC in Toronto. She is the only aboriginal person to work as a television anchor in the national broadcaster's 50 year history. While passionate about relaying traditional stories about Indigenous people, she observes that the conventions of television journalism form systemic barriers. Carla Robinson returns to her home community in Kitimat whenever she can, for it is there she is able to realign her work-life balance.
Series two of “Storytellers in motion'' celebrates the achievements of Canada's Indigenous artists who work across media that include photography, print journalism, screenwriting for film and television and broadcast news. All have inspiring careers and contribute their thoughts on their place in mainstream media as they seek to define the Indigenous voice.
