February Sixteenth Nineteen Forty-Seven
(2024, 4 minutes)
"February Sixteenth Nineteen Forty-Seven" is a four-minute animated documentary in which Inuk Elder Levinia Brown recounts the extraordinary circumstances of her birth while her family travelled by dogsled across the open tundra from Tavani to Dawson Inlet in the dead of winter. When her mother goes into labour during the journey, the family continues on through extreme conditions without access to hospitals or government services. Illustrated through cutout stop-motion animation inspired by hand-sewn Inuit wall hanging designs in the style of Levinia’s own artwork, this oral history honours Inuit resilience, intergenerational knowledge, and a land-based culture grounded in survival, gratitude, and connection to the land.
