Finding Fred Lee 1.0
(2023, 27 minutes)
Jack Gin was astonished to learn that a Chinese Canadian kid named Fred Lee volunteered for Canada during the First World War. Finding Fred Lee 1.0 is told through Gin's eyes as he journeys to Lee's hometown of Kamloops, BC to uncover traces of this forgotten son.
Frederick Lee was born in Kamloops, BC and among the very first Chinese Canadians to enlist in the Canadian Expeditionary Forces (CEF) of the First World War. This was at a time when the Chinese Head Tax and Chinese Exclusion Act existed. How could Lee enlist at a time when racism was rife in Canada? Lee survived Vimy Ridge with the 47th Battalion but was killed during the Battle of Hill 70. He was 21 years old and his remains were never found.
