Landscapes of Home
(2024, 54 minutes)
Landscapes of Home follows the lives of two doctors who were at the New Denver and Lemon Creek Japanese-Canadian internment camps during the 1940s and 1950s. Through interviews with Dr. Henry Ryusuke Shibata (1930-present) and relatives and acquaintances of Dr. Stuart Cooper Robinson (1921-2011), the documentary shows how these brave and driven individuals helped victims with Japanese heritage recover after their lives were ripped away from them.
The story develops by mirroring the experiences of Dr. Robinson with Dr. Shibata, who both grew up as second- and third-generation immigrants in another land before they were forced to abandon their homes. Dr. Robinson, born and raised in Nagoya, Japan, was raised in a surprisingly Japanese lifestyle by his white British-Canadian missionary family. Conversely, Dr. Shibata was born a Japanese-Canadian in Vancouver, BC, where he was raised with Japanese customs at home and Canadian experiences in the public sphere. As hostilities increased between Japan and Canada during the Second World War, both were forced to leave their homes and old lives behind. When the war came to an end, both found themselves tending to Japanese heritage victims displaced by the war, recovering fragments of their lost identities in new and unfamiliar lands.
