Pictures Don't Lie: JJ Van Bibber

(2016, 20 minutes)

JJ Van Bibber (1920-2012) was a prolific photographer in the Yukon. His mother was a First Nations woman from Alaska; his father, a stampeder from West Virginia who came to the Yukon looking for Gold in 1898. Pictures Don't Lie presents a beautiful montage of Van Bibber's black and white photographs with recorded stories he told as an Elder, made available by his descendants. He received his first camera at age 13. The images he created documented everyday activities, giving a wonderful view of traditional life in the Yukon as he and his family travelled the interior, hunting, trapping and surviving on the land.
