Pressure Point 06: The Fine Art of Sustainable Clear-Cuts

(2022, 18 minutes)
"Pressure Point" is a satirical documentary series exploring British Columbia’s environmental issues through fictional interviews with politicians and senior bureaucrats.

A satirical look at British Columbia forestry policy, environmental protection and the conflicting interests of managing forests and the environment.

Over the decades, it has happened that a particularly capable and trusted politician is given more than one ministry to manage concurrently. And on occasion, the ministries in question have had opposite–you might even say conflicting–goals. This episode was inspired not only by those memories but also by a conversation with a friend who was travelling in Japan and asked a tree lot owner how often they harvested trees. The owner responded, "Well, as long as Canada is giving its tree away for pretty much free, maybe never." What might a minister in charge of the environment and forestry have to say about Canadian policies and whether he could see the forest for the trees or the wood?
