Painting the Ancestors' Stories
Wolastoqiyik artist Arlene “Dozay” Christmas draws from oral tradition, history, and the land to bring Indigenous stories to canvas. Dozay aimed to bring traditional knowledge from museum storage rooms back to her community. From murals to fine art, she incorporates Wolastoqiyik petroglyphs, basketry, and landscapes to revive ancestral knowledge. Through research and collaboration with Wabanaki Elders, Dozay breathes life into Glooscap/Kluskap legends, ensuring that these stories remain vibrant for future generations.
