Pressure Point 02: Mine Your Own Business

(2022, 20 minutes)
"Pressure Point" is a satirical documentary series exploring British Columbia’s environmental issues through fictional interviews with politicians and senior bureaucrats.
This episode was inspired by the disastrous collapse of the Mount Polley tailings pond dam. Twenty-five billion litres of contaminated mining waste roared into Polley Lake, Hazeltine Creek, Quesnel Lake, and the Cariboo River. One report determined that the dam failed because a layer of glacial till gave way under the tailings pond. Does this explain why the mining company wasn't charged or fined? Was it deemed to be complying with the Province's operating requirements and so a successful prosecution was considered unlikely? What might a politician have to say about this murky incident? Should the company only be responsible for cleaning its corporate offices but nothing else?
