“Mr. Tapwe: Doug Cuthand” Series 1 Episode 8
Doug Cuthand believes that the land nurtures the arts in Saskatchewan, a belief reflected in his films and writings. This documentary explores Cuthand's literary and documentary work, from his determination to take on tough issues in his column for the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix to his love of getting his boots dirty at the Indian National Finals Rodeo. He believes in conveying the truth, both in his choice of stories and in the manner in which he tells them. Cuthand became a storyteller through hearing stories from his parents, who were both teachers, and from the community. His father was also an historian who inspired him to pursue journalism. As an award-winning producer, writer, director and journalist, Doug Cuthand is known for his weekly column titled “Tapwe”, or truth in the Cree language. His first book, “Tapwe”, a collection of his columns, was nominated for a Saskatchewan Book Award in 2006. Another book, “Askiwina: a Cree World”, was released in April 2007.
Over three seasons, “Storytellers in Motion”, introduces a number of Canada's Indigenous storytellers. Sharing excerpts from their films, these storytellers comment on their work and explore their creative voices.
