Ahon
(2025, 20 minutes)
Ahon (“Rise”) explores how the Filipino-Canadians of the K8 Mountaineering Club band together to reach dizzying heights while celebrating Filipino culture and breaking barriers in Canada’s Rocky Mountains. Directed by filmmaker Trixie Pacis, this short film is a love letter to the heart and spirit of Filipino immigrants. Ahon details the story of K8, a non-profit organization that provides crucial access to education, equipment, and community to Filipino-Canadians eager to explore the outdoors. The film weaves mountain adventure, including climbs on Mount Yamnuska and the multi-day mission to summit Howse Peak, with the figurative mountains that Founder Levi Ramos and President Leonard Maglalang climbed when they immigrated to Canada in search of better lives. The K8 members are not just pursuing adventure; they are preserving their culture for future generations. By drawing parallels between mountain adventure and the grand adventure of immigrating to a new country, the film aims to inspire healing in nature and generate further support for K8's mission.
The film is presented in English and Tagalog with subtitles.
